The Lord Jesus Christ is the one who knows “all things” (Matthew 11:27; John 16:30; 21:17), “in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3). His commands carry all the authority in the universe, and they are what the church is to teach (Matthew 28:18-20). He declared, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away” (Matthew 24:35; Mark 13:31; Luke 21:33). It is imperative that we listen to him (Matthew 17:5; Mark 8:38; Luke 9:26; Acts 3:19-23) because the things Jesus taught are actually from God, not from any  mere fallible human source (John 3:34f.; 5:19f.; 7:15-18; 8:26-29,37-40,45-47; 12:44-50; 14:10,24,26; 15:15; 16:13-15; 17:6-8,14).<\/span><\/p>\n

So, if we call ourselves his disciples, shouldn’t his view of the Bible be ours also?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Below are exhibited all of the gospel texts in which Jesus referred to what we now call the “Old Testament,” showing his high view of the authority and historical truth of Scripture. The English Standard Version<\/i> (ESV) is the translation cited; bold print<\/strong> indicates emphasis added. Some selected quotations from biblical scholars are interspersed throughout the texts.<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Matthew 4:4,7,10<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus quoted Deuteronomy to counter Satan’s temptations (“it is written,” 3 times)<\/span><\/p>\n

But he answered, \u201cIt is written<\/strong>, \u2018Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God<\/strong>.\u2019 \u201d . . . Jesus said to him, \u201cAgain it is written<\/strong>, \u2018You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.\u2019 \u201d . . . Then Jesus said to him, \u201cBe gone, Satan! For it is written<\/strong>, \u2018You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.\u2019 \u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Luke 4:4,8,12<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus quoted Deuteronomy to counter Satan’s temptations (“it is written,” twice; “it is said”)<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Matthew 5:17-19<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus held to the eternal authority of the Law and the Prophets, which will be fulfilled  in detail as written<\/i>, to the letter (“iota”), and even to a small fraction of a letter (“dot”)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDo not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets<\/strong>; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them<\/strong>. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot<\/strong>, will pass from the Law<\/strong> until all is accomplished<\/strong>. Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments<\/strong> and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven<\/strong>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Matthew 8:4<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus accepted the historical reality of one of Moses’ commands<\/span><\/p>\n

And Jesus said to him, \u201cSee that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift that Moses commanded<\/strong>, for a proof to them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mark 1:43f.<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus told the healed leper to offer “what Moses commanded”<\/span><\/p>\n

And Jesus sternly charged him and sent him away at once, and said to him, \u201cSee that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded<\/strong>, for a proof to them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Luke 5:14<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus told the healed leper to make an offering “as Moses commanded”<\/span><\/p>\n

And he charged him to tell no one, but \u201cgo and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, as Moses commanded<\/strong>, for a proof to them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Matthew 8:11<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus accepted the historical reality of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI tell you, many will come<\/strong> from east and west and recline<\/strong> at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob<\/strong> in the kingdom of heaven. . . .\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

5. Matthew 9:13<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus quoted Hosea 6:6 and advised taking it seriously<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGo and learn what this means<\/strong>, \u2018I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.\u2019 For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

6. Matthew 10:15<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus accepted the historical reality of Sodom and Gomorrah<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTruly, I say to you, it will be<\/strong> more bearable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah<\/strong> than for that town.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

7. Matthew 11:10<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus quoted Malachi 3:1 as referring to John the baptizer (“it is written”)<\/span><\/p>\n

But I tell you, it will be<\/strong> more bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon<\/strong> than for you. And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom<\/strong>, it would have remained until this day. But I tell you<\/strong> that it will be<\/strong> more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom<\/strong> than for you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Luke 10:13f.<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus accepted the historical reality of Tyre and Sidon<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWoe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon<\/strong>, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 9. Matthew 12:3-7<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus accepted the historical reality of David’s action (“Have you not read?”); the Sabbath command (“have you not read in the Law?”); and he quoted Hosea 6:6 (“if you had known what this means”)<\/span><\/p>\n

He said to them, \u201cHave you not read<\/strong> what David did when he was hungry, and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God and ate the bread of the Presence, which it was not lawful for him to eat nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests? Or have you not read in the Law<\/strong> how on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath and are guiltless? I tell you, something greater than the temple is here. And if you had known what this means<\/strong>, \u2018I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,\u2019 you would not have condemned the guiltless.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mark 2:25f.<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus accepted the historical reality of David’s action (“Have you never read?”)<\/span><\/p>\n

And he said to them, \u201cHave you never read<\/strong> what David did, when he was in need and was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God, in the time of <\/i>Abiathar the high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those who were with him?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Luke 6:3f.<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus accepted the historical reality of David’s action (“Have you not read?”)<\/span><\/p>\n

And Jesus answered them, \u201cHave you not read<\/strong> what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

10. Matthew 12:39-42<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus accepted the historical reality of Jonah, the great fish, Nineveh, the Queen of the South, Solomon<\/span><\/p>\n

But he answered them, \u201cAn evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For just as Jonah was<\/strong> three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be<\/strong> three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh will<\/strong> rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah<\/strong>, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here. The queen of the South will<\/strong> rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came<\/strong> from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon<\/strong>, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Luke 11:29-32<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus accepted the historical reality of Jonah, Nineveh, the Queen of the South, Solomon<\/span><\/p>\n

When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, \u201cThis generation is an evil generation. It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. For as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be<\/strong> to this generation. The queen of the South will<\/strong> rise up at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came<\/strong> from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon<\/strong>, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. The men of Nineveh will<\/strong> rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah<\/strong>, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

11. Matthew 13:14f.<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus quoted Isaiah 6:9f. as having been fulfilled<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIndeed, in their case the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled<\/strong> that says: \u2018You will indeed hear but never understand, and you will indeed see but never perceive. For this people’s heart has grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.\u2019 \u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

12. Matthew 15:3-9<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus quoted Exodus (“commandment of God,” “God commanded,” “word of God”)   and Isaiah 29:13 (“Well did Isaiah prophesy of you”); and he challenged his opponents on their failure to honour God’s word<\/span><\/p>\n

He answered them, \u201cAnd why do you break the commandment of God<\/strong> for the sake of your tradition? For God commanded<\/strong>, \u2018Honor your father and your mother,\u2019 and, \u2018Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.\u2019 But you say, \u2018If anyone tells his father or his mother, \u201cWhat you would have gained from me is given to God,\u201d he need not honor his father.\u2019 So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God<\/strong>. You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you<\/strong>, when he said: \u2018This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.\u2019 \u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mark 7:6-13<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus quoted Isaiah 29:13 (“Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written”) and Exodus (“the commandment of God,” “Moses said,” “the word of God”)<\/span><\/p>\n

And he said to them, \u201cWell did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written<\/strong>, \u2018This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.\u2019 You leave the commandment of God<\/strong> and hold to the tradition of men.\u201d And he said to them, \u201cYou have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God<\/strong> in order to establish your tradition! For Moses said<\/strong>, \u2018Honor your father and your mother\u2019; and, \u2018Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.\u2019 But you say, \u2018If a man tells his father or his mother, \u201cWhatever you would have gained from me is Corban\u201d \u2019 (that is, given to God)\u2014then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother, thus making void the word of God<\/strong> by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

13. Matthew 19:4-9<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus quoted Genesis 1:27; 2:24 (“Have you not read?”, “he who created them . . . said”); he referred to Deuteronomy 24:1 (“Moses allowed”); and he urged on the basis of Scripture, “What therefore God has joined together, let man not separate.”<\/span><\/p>\n

He answered, \u201cHave you not read<\/strong> that he who created them<\/strong> from the beginning made them male and female, and said<\/strong>, \u2018Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh\u2019? So<\/strong> they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.<\/strong>\u201d They said to him, \u201cWhy then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?\u201d He said to them, \u201cBecause of your hardness of heart Moses allowed<\/strong> you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. And I say to you<\/strong>: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mark 10:3-9<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus referred to Deuteronomy 24:1; he quoted Genesis 1:27; 2:24; and he urged on the basis of Scripture: “What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”<\/span><\/p>\n

He answered them, \u201cWhat did Moses command<\/strong> you?\u201d They said, \u201cMoses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce and to send her away.\u201d And Jesus said to them, \u201cBecause of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment<\/strong>. But from the beginning of creation, \u2018God made them male and female.\u2019 \u2018Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, <\/b>and the two shall become one flesh.\u2019 So<\/strong> they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.<\/strong>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

14. Matthew 19:17-19<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus quoted some of “the commandments” written in Exodus (or in Deuteronomy) and Leviticus<\/span><\/p>\n

If you would enter life, keep the commandments.<\/strong>\u201d He said to him, \u201cWhich ones?\u201d And Jesus said, \u201cYou shall not murder<\/strong>, You shall not commit adultery<\/strong>, You shall not steal<\/strong>, You shall not bear false witness<\/strong>, Honor your father and mother<\/strong>, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself<\/strong>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mark 10:19<\/b> \u2014 Jesus quoted some of “the commandments” from Exodus (or from Deuteronomy)<\/span><\/p>\n

17. Matthew 21:42<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus quoted Psalm 118:22f. (“Have you never read in the Scriptures?”)<\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus said to them, \u201cHave you never read in the Scriptures<\/strong>: \u2018The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes\u2019?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

18. Matthew 22:29-32<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus linked being “wrong” with not knowing the Scriptures; and he quoted Exodus 3:6 (“have you not  read what was said to you by God?”)<\/span><\/p>\n

But Jesus answered them, \u201cYou are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God.<\/strong> For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God<\/strong>: \u2018I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the  God of Jacob\u2019? He is not God of the dead, but of the living.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mark 12:24-27<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus linked being “wrong”\/”quite wrong” with not knowing the Scriptures; and he quoted Exodus 3:6 (“have you not read . . . how God spoke to him?”)<\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus said to them, \u201cIs this not the reason you are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God?<\/strong> For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. And as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses<\/strong>, in the passage about the bush, how God spoke to him<\/strong>, saying, \u2018I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob\u2019? He is not God of the dead, but of the living. You are quite wrong.<\/strong>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Luke 20:37<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus referenced the words of Moses as authoritative<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBut that the dead are raised, even Moses showed<\/strong>, in the passage about the bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

19. Matthew 22:37-40<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus quoted commands from Deuteronomy and Leviticus (“On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”)<\/span><\/p>\n

And he said to him, \u201cYou shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it<\/strong>: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.<\/strong>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mark 12:29-31<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus quoted commands from Deuteronomy and Leviticus (“There is no other commandment greater than these.”)<\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus answered, \u201cThe most important is, \u2018Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.\u2019 The second is this: \u2018You shall love your neighbor as yourself.\u2019 There is no other commandment greater than these.<\/strong>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

20. Matthew 22:43-45<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus quoted from, and argued based on, Psalm 110:1 (David spoke “in the Spirit”)<\/span><\/p>\n

He said to them, \u201cHow is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying<\/strong>, \u2018The Lord said to my Lord, \u201cSit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet\u201d \u2019? If then David calls him Lord<\/strong>, how is he his son?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mark 12:36f.<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus quoted from, and argued based on, Psalm 110:1 (David spoke “in the Holy Spirit”)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDavid himself, in the Holy Spirit, declared<\/strong>, \u2018The Lord said to my Lord, \u201cSit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet.\u201d \u2019 David himself calls him Lord. So<\/strong> how is he his son?\u201d And the great throng heard him gladly.<\/span><\/p>\n

Luke 20:42-44<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus quoted from, and argued based on, Psalm 110:1 (“David himself says in the Book of Psalms”)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFor David himself says in the Book of Psalms<\/strong>, \u2018The Lord said to my Lord, \u201cSit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.\u201d \u2019 David thus calls him Lord, so<\/strong> how is he his son?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

21. Matthew 23:35<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus accepted the historical reality of the murders of Abel and Zechariah<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c . . . so that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah<\/strong>, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Luke 11:50f.<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus accepted the historical reality of the murders of Abel and Zechariah<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c. . . so that the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world, may be charged against this generation, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah<\/strong>, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be required of this generation.<\/strong>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

22. Matthew 24:15f.<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus referred to Daniel’s prophecy of “the abomination of desolation,” which will be fulfilled<\/span><\/p>\n

31. Luke 4:25-27<\/strong> \u2014 Jesus accepted the historical reality of Elijah, the widow of Zarephath, Elisha, Naaman the Syrian<\/span><\/p>\n

Then he said to them, \u201cThese are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled<\/strong>.\u201d Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and said to them, \u201cThus it is written<\/strong>, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. His commands carry all the authority in the universe, and they are what the church is to teach (Matthew 28:18-20). He declared, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away” (Matthew 24:35; Mark 13:31; Luke 21:33).
